If you are considering pursuing a career in the art industry there is no better place to get your start than California. This state has plenty of choices for art schools. Whether you want to earn a degree in fine arts, graphic design, computer animation, or web design, you will be able to attend a school in California. Students can earn degrees in as little as eighteen months to be on the job quickly. Students can also pursue traditional associates and bachelor’s degrees.
California Arts Job Outlook and Salary
The job outlook for a career in the arts in California is good. The growth rate for positions in fine arts is expected to grow about 11 percent in the next ten years. There are currently just over 2,700 fine artists employed in the state. However, as approximately sixty percent of painters, sculptors, and illustrators are self-employed, that number can be slightly misleading. The salary range for those employed as fine artists in the state is $36,000 to $71,000 per year. Income levels for fine artists are highly dependent on the state of the economy.
In other areas of art related occupations, there is also expected to be growth in terms of available jobs. For art directors, there is projected to be a fourteen percent growth over the next ten years, and for graphic designers the growth rate should also be around fourteen percent. Salaries for art directors are generally between $66,000 and $168,000. Graphic designers in California can expect to earn a salary that ranges from $37,000 to $64,000. Theses salaries are dependent on the level of education achieved and the number of years of experience in the industry.
Those working in the art industry in California will have competition for positions. Even thought there are a higher number of jobs available in this state, there are still more applicants than jobs. Fine artists who are self employed may need to have additional part-time employment while building a reputation and expanding the sale of their artwork. Advancement in this industry can be achieved through education and becoming specialized in a particular area of their field.
