How to Get Scholarships for Art School

Choosing an art school is difficult enough. Figuring out how to pay for that education can be a whole other issue. Money doesn’t just grow on trees, but you shouldn’t give up on your dreams of education simply because you can’t afford it. In today’s world, there are more financial options and scholarships available to students than ever before. Taking advantage of these financial options will allow you to make the most of your education and career. Getting things for free is always good, which is why scholarships are one of the best options for art school students. While grants are available, they are few and far between, and often much harder to obtain. Here are some tips on getting scholarships for art school:

-Research what’s out there. Use the internet to figure out what types of scholarships are available to art majors. Some might be discriminatory, such as gender or race specific, and most will be specifically for art majors. Know what your options are so that you can know which ones you are eligible for.

-Eliminate scholarships that do not apply. If you find an art school scholarship for women, and you’re a man, you obviously won’t apply for that one. Make a list of scholarships that are potentially useful and eliminate any that aren’t applicable or that you don’t qualify for.

-Once you have a shorter list, go through and read the requirements for each scholarship. If any of them take too long to be awarded or have criteria that you can’t meet, cross them off your list.

-Apply for scholarships that you are eligible for and that suit your major. If you are required to supply samples of your work or write an essay, make sure that you take it very seriously. After all, these sections of the scholarship application are often much more important than the contact information and basic questions.

-Wait for responses, but don’t be impatient. Read the guidelines and conditions of the applications that you fill out to see when the winner will be announced. The scholarship creators are usually pretty good about letting people know exactly when to expect their answer.

-The final tip: Apply early and often. There is no such thing as too much money. Start applying for scholarships as soon as you have decided that you are going to art school. Even freshmen and sophomores in high school can apply for many scholarships and save them until they graduate.

Now that you know more about how to get scholarships for art school, you can go out there and find the ones that you want. With so many different scholarships and financial options, no one should be able to say that they can’t afford art school.
